When MDG opened its doors in 1985, we were in the midst of an epidemic that rocked our industry to its core.  An illness had stricken many people in the beauty industry; it was a scary time.  During a 10-year period, we lost 8 beautiful people to this disease.  Twenty-six years later, there is still no cure for AIDS; and while awareness, education and advancements in medicine have greatly helped better control AIDS in our country, it is still an epidemic in many parts of the world – namely Africa.

Today, December 1, 2011 is World AIDS Day.  In memorandum of those of the MDG family who lost the battle to this terrible disease, we’d like to honor their spirit and memory by supporting the efforts of all those who fight for the advancement of this cause everyday.

Winter is as winter does…to your hair.  It’s cold (which means you need a hat).  It’s dry (which means your locks need moisture).  It’s dry, still (which means your hair starts loosing its luster).  It’s windy (which means your ‘do gets thrown around alot).  Maintaining balance in harsh weather isn’t always easy for your tresses but here are a few helpful hints to keep your hair in check:

1)  Listen to your stylist when they tell you it’s time to switch up the shampoo and get something with more umph!  Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner are winter favorites.

2)  Dry air leads to an assortment of issues: loss of shine, luster and moisture.  BIG problems.  Try a product like Moroccan Oil Glimmer Shine Spray to lightly mist over any style to add the lost elements back in.

3)  When wearing a hat or cap, if possible, use a bobby-pin or clip to secure it into your hair.  This reduces the chances of messing up you style that you spent half your morning working on.

4)  Don’t work against your hair.  Work with it.  If you’re having problems controlling the frizz and flyaways, don’t throw a fit…throw a few braids in and make it a little messy.  It’ll look intentionally “done.”  And we won’t tell anyone.  It’ll be our little secret.

5)  And most important!  Get trims all winter-long.  Despite your greatest fears, you’re likely to get more split-ends during the winter for two reasons.  ONE: you will blowdry more in the winter then you will during any other season the year (no colds!).  This means more damage.  TWO: the environment is stronger then your hair.  The air will do anything possible to break your hair down (it’s all in electrodes, static electricity and a bunch of molecular level stuff we’re not smart enough to understand).  But we know enough to see more damage in winter due to it.  A routine and scheduled trim will only help your hair during the warmer months.  PLUS, it’ll give you something to look forward to.  Who doesn’t like coming to the salon?!

We’re excited to announce that on Thursday, November 10th MDG will be hosting another Botox Day with our medical director and Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Peter Kunz!  Our salon offers a private, comfortable medical studio for all services.

Dr Kunz of Minimally Invasive Aesthetic Surgery (MIAS) has been a partner and friend of MDG for many years and is highly respected in his field.  MIAS will beoffering $100 OFF of Botox that day only.  With free touch-ups one week later at their office on Clarian North’s campus, so this is an opportunity not to be missed!

Individual & complimentary consultations will be available as well the same day.  Space is limited and by appointment only.

Please call 317.843.5353 for more information or to schedule an appointment!

We have had a few requests (ahem, Tiff) for posting a blog-roll on caring for curly hair.  Curls can be exteremely difficult to deal with, especially when you don’t know what to do with them!  Downtown stylist Teresa Zwit has naturally curly hair herself and knows the woes.  Luckily for us she provided some useful tips for all of you ladies who deal with it on a daily basis:

<<<<>>>>

Condition ONLY the ends of the hair and do a quick rinse leaving some of the conditioner in. curly hair craves the extra moisture – it also helps reduce frizz.  Frequent trims are a must. Split ends are the first to frizz.  So don’t panic: we’re not talking inches here, just ends…

Speaking of frequent trims: I also think it is very important that your stylist has experience with curly hair…even better if they have natural curls themselves!  Your stylist especially needs to be knowledgeable in texturizing curls – it’s NOT the same as straight hair!  Using a curling iron to tame a few of the curls around your face and crown creates a finished look.  Second day hair is my favorite.  Here’s my routine:

1)    I don’t wash my curls everyday to prevent color fading and you don’t want to wash away your natural oils before they can do their job.

2)    I often can rejuvenate my curls with a light mist from a water bottle and scrunching with a smooth serum.

3)    If your scalp seems oily you can freshen up with dry shampoo or work it out with a messy ponytail or loose bun.

*If you, or anyone you know, has curly hair…and needs help call Teresa Zwit at 317.457.8273…right now…

Here are a few pictures from the salon!  The feather extension fad is in full force!

Meridian Design Group Stylist & Natural Nail Technician Teresa Zwit is now offering Shellac Manicures. You may have heard about the new phenomenon from Creative Nail Design- Shellac. Everyone’s buzzing about it, including Oprah!

In a nutshell, a Shellac manicure wears up to 14-days – no chips, no smudges and best of all ZERO drying time!!  With a formula free of damaging chemicals like formaldehyde, toulene & DBP — Shellac is safe for everyone!

The removal process takes less than 10 minutes without damaging the natural nails. What more could you ask for!?!  Teresa highly recommends a Shellac manicure for special occasions as well!  Brides say good bye to the harsh acrylics (which honestly, don’t we impatiently tear them off and completely destroy our natural nails anyways!?) Shellac is a fool proof must have manicure!  A Shellac manicure is regularly priced at $32.00 & $34.00 for french polish.

Farrah Fawcett (my she rest in peace) was known for her feathered do.  In the 70′s, her style sent millions of women flocking to the salon to get the feathered look.  These days, however, the style is somewhat passe…and not as wildly popular.  Feather extensions, on the other hand, ARE wildly popular at the moment.  Downtown stylists’ Allison Rutledge and Kathy Blanchard are relentlessly pouring over articles, blogs and magazines to stay ahead of the [fashion] curve.  They’ve both seen a lot feathers recently.

Feathers, you ask?

Yes, one of the hottest trends right now are BABE Feather Extensions.  Lauren Alaina from American Idol sported them  throughout the season, as have many other celebrities like Selena Gomez, Beyonce and (of course) Steven Tyler…

We are now offering feather extensions at our downtown location and we’re making an order for Carmel today!
